Community Service Day Information

UF Law has a long tradition of giving back to our community. During ILSP, incoming 1Ls will participate in a day of community service. Groups of new students and ambassadors will spread out to sites across Gainesville to help out with various projects. It’s a rewarding day of hard work and fun that you will never forget!

Community service is an essential component of your legal education. As a lawyer, you will make a commitment to serve your community’s legal needs. As an advocate, you are taking leadership roles both inside and outside of the courtroom. Many lawyers serve their community as leaders, organizers, advocates, and philanthropists. You will be in a position of power and influence and as such you’ll have a responsibility to your community. Community service allows you to give back to those in need by performing a selfless act of kindness. An effective, professional and respected lawyer is honest, diligent, empathetic, and mindful. One of the best ways to instill these values is to participate in community service while in law school.

Community service can have practical benefits for your career as well. Volunteering unites people from diverse backgrounds, builds camaraderie, and fosters teamwork. Working on a community service project is a fun and easy way to get to know your fellow law students, especially those who are not in your section. Volunteering provides excellent opportunities for networking. The organizations and people you help out could very well become future clients or refer your future clients.

Public service is also a core value of professional responsibility according to the Florida Bar. The Bar requires legal pro-bono work for every member and encourages non-legal community service. Certificates can be earned through the law-school for pro-bono and community service hours, which may enhance your employability while in law school and beyond. Volunteer opportunities are provided on an ongoing basis throughout the year by UF Law to help facilitate our connection with the community and foster an environment that values community service.

Participating in community service during ILSP and with continuing opportunities throughout law school will give you the values, skills and connections you need to succeed and become a vital member of whatever community you serve after graduation.
