49th U.S.-Japan Conference on Cholera and Other Enteric Bacterial Infections

Jan. 14-16, 2015

Gainesville, FL

Welcome

On behalf of the Japanese Panel of Cholera and Other Bacterial Enteric Infections, I welcome you to the United States-Japan Cooperative Medical Science Program (UJCMSP) 49th Annual Joint Panel Meeting. The meeting will be held from January 14 through January 16, 2015 in Gainesville, Florida, USA. The US-Japan Joint meeting has generally been held in the US and Japan in turns. However, a revolutionary and wonderful change of the tradition has been made by the US Cholera Panel recently, having the joint meeting held, in the years that it was the US turn for the meeting, in non-US and non-Japanese Asian countries where diarrhea is prevalent. It is actually the Japanese turn to host this coming meeting. However, my old friend, Professor Glenn Morris of University of Florida, kindly agreed to have the meeting in Florida. This is in part due to the wish by Asian scientists including the Japanese to join periodically in an informative and stimulating meeting held in US. I believe the Florida meeting, a new trial, after a 4-year departure from the US, will further strengthen the US-Japan-Asia association. The Japanese Cholera Panel very much thanks Prof. J. G. Morris, University of Florida, the US Cholera Panel, and Dr. Robert Hall for their flexibility in making this change, and their great help, and encouragement, in setting up the meeting.

On behalf of the University of Florida, www.ufl.edu, and the UF Emerging Pathogens Institute, www.epi.ufl.edu, I would like to invite you to attend the 49th Joint Conference on Cholera and Other Bacterial Enteric Infections, and welcome you to Gainesville, the home of the University of Florida. We are very pleased to be serving as the host for the Conference this year, in support of the Japanese Cholera Panel.  We are looking forward to an exciting program, with the top investigators globally in cholera and enteric diseases.

We will also try to make it an enjoyable time for attendees here in Florida.  Gainesville is in north central Florida, some 50 miles from both Atlantic beaches and the Gulf Coast.  For our January meeting dates expect lots of sun, and warm days with cool evenings.  The meeting backs up to the Martin Luther King weekend holiday (Monday, January 19 is an official U.S. holiday), so we hope you will be able to spend some time touring our state; for those who are interested, we are also planning tours/activities for the Saturday and Sunday following the conference.

We look forward to seeing you in January.
