Collaborative Curriculum Design for Authentic STEM Education

The University of Florida Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences is pleased to offer a workshop series for 9^th-12^th grade STEM and Agriculture teachers focused on interdisciplinary science topics. The Collaborative Curriculum Design for Authentic STEM Education (CCDASE) will help you re-work classroom lessons to incorporate science and agricultural research that is contemporary and relevant to your local context with an equity teaching focus to increase access for all learners. The instruction time will total 24 education hours.

The first workshop in the series will take place Friday, September 29 and Saturday, September 30 at the University of Florida’s North Florida Research and Education Center in Marianna, FL. Our focus will be on the cattle industry as we dive into research to increase productivity while being mindful of environmental impacts from forage and greenhouse gases.

What does the workshop look like?

The Collaborative Curriculum Design for Authentic STEM Education (CCDASE) workshop has three parts:

A virtual, asynchronous, 6-hour component on Facilitating STEM for All Learners, completed through UF Canvas before September 29, 2023**.
A synchronous, in-person (Marianna, FL at UF’s North Florida Research and Education Center) evening and weekend session, Friday and Saturday, September 29-30, 2023 (10 hours total) focusing on discussions of goals, collaboration with scientists and education researchers and fellow teachers, lab tours, and presentations of research content. See detailed tentative agenda below.
Choice of at least 2 synchronous virtual sessions focused on re-designing a course component (8 hours total). These dates will be determined by participants but held weekday evenings and/or weekends in October 2023.

How do I apply?

A brief registration form follows, simply requesting name and course and school district information. We anticipate it will take no more than 10 minutes to complete and requires no additional documentation such as principal approval (though we encourage you to make arrangements with your principal for needed approvals before applying).

Who should consider applying?

For the CCDASE workshop, we are prioritizing 9^th-12^th grade science, agriculture, and CTE teachers who work with diverse student populations in Alachua County, North Florida, and the NEFEC and PAEC regions. Teachers from Georgia and Alabama are welcome to submit a registration form as well. Middle school teachers are welcome to attend as well as space allows.

Costs covered and stipends offered:

$75 for substitute teacher coverage (in summer, must be teaching summer courses to receive this reimbursement to the school)
Heavy hors d’oeuvres for Friday evening, September 29; and Breakfast, lunch, coffee on Saturday, September 30, are included.
Hotel room available (double occupancy) for the evening of Friday, September 29 (hotel stay not required)
$500 stipend upon completion of all three components and research activities

Content presentations on productivity and sustainability in the beef industry -- livestock research to increase productivity while being mindful of environmental impacts from forage and greenhouse gases
Tours of research facilities

Content presentations on authentic STEM lesson planning
Initial collaborations on lesson re-design and sharing of initial plans
Introduction to the virtual follow-up sessions and presentations of original ideas
Wrap-up and depart

Virtual follow-up sessions (Dates and times in October 2023, TBD)

Continue the collaborative lesson re-design and feature interim and final presentations of re-designed lessons. Teachers will select at least two, 4-hour sessions (tentatively) to attend to work virtually with STEM professionals with expertise in invasive species content, UF Education experts, and fellow teachers to re-design their lessons to feature authentic, local, and contemporary science content. Virtual sessions will take place in October 2023.

After completion of the workshop, teachers will receive certification of their completion and, if interested, may be invited to share their lesson at upcoming workshops with fellow teachers as an example of lessons on authentic STEM learning for all students. These workshops will be planned for later 2023 and 2024.

Dr. Heather Kent, co-lead STEM Education expert, UF/IFAS Regional Specialized 4-H Agent IV/ Northwest District

Dr. Julie Bokor, co-lead STEM Education expert

Science and Agriculture Researchers:

Dr. Nicolas DiLorenzo, Assistant Professor in Animal Sciences at the North Florida Research and Education Center in Marianna. His primary research and extension interests are in beef cattle nutrition, with the objective of improving the efficiency of use of forages minimizing the environmental impact.

Dr. Jose Dubeux, Professor in Agronomy at the North Florida Research and Education Center in Marianna. His research focuses on sustainable forage production to support livestock.

Dr. Liza Garcia-Jimenez, Research Coordinator for Animal Sciences at the North Florida Research and Education Center in Marianna. Her primary research focuses on Ecosystem services provided by contrasting grazing systems in North Florida.

Dr. Angela Gonella Diaza, Assistant Professor in Animal Sciences at the North Florida Research and Education Center in Marianna. Her research focuses on biotechnology and cattle reproduction.
